The legacy of Coldwell Banker began in San Francisco, shortly after the 1906 earthquake. In the time immediately before the First World War, while Colbert Coldwell and Benjamin Arthur Banker were striving to establish a real estate business, San Francisco was hardly the booming market it is today. The scrub-grown rolling dunes of the City’s western half, it was agreed, would never be habitable. Downtown practices were nearly as informal as they had been during the Gold Rush.

Coldwell and Banker were trying to make progress in an industry where, to put it bluntly, respectable business practices were rare. The two saw an opportunity to distinguish themselves by offering honest, knowledgeable and competent real estate services, bringing much-needed integrity to the profession.

Soon after joining forces, Coldwell and Banker opened their first office in San Francisco. Today that office, as well as more than 60 Coldwell Banker offices throughout Northern California, remains a proud symbol of where the legacy of Coldwell and Banker began.
